Log 56: Room Draw
Yesterday, for what I believe is the first time since I’ve been here, I felt a little socially burned out by life at the hostel. I knew it would happen eventually, and coming home from work to all new faces did it for me. I even had a new roommate - presumably someone Daniel rented the room to because the dorms were all booked up.
I spent the evening watching the sunset on the beach outside Hakuna Matata. When I eventually bid the ocean shore adieu, I prepared myself to put on a smile and be sociable. After a few introductions, I retreated to the patio to listen to music and be alone for a while. As I sat in silence, I felt a tap on my shoulder. I whirled around to see who was there (I’m rather jumpy when I sit out there because there are bugs), and my face lit up when I did.
“Nora!” I exclaimed. Nora left the hostel a week or so ago to stay with her son, who lives on Oahu, for a little bit. I had no idea when or if she was returning. But there she was, with her sunhat, beach tote, and a bottle of Don Julio in hand. “I’m back!” She declared. Then she looked unsure for a moment. “I’m staying in your room for now, I hope that’s okay with you?” I smiled at her and nodded, “Nora, I cannot tell you how happy I am that you’re here.” She smiled at that.
“Have you had dinner?” She asked me. I shook my head. “Let's make something!” She suggested. I hopped up from where I was sitting and followed her into the kitchen. We made shrimp fried rice and a simple salad, then returned to the patio to eat. After we cleaned up, Nora made me a drink that was way too strong for my liking, and we went to bed.
Highlight: Michelle and Damien - the couple who came to my rescue in the pouring rain at Safeway - texted me today that they had renewed their vows.
