Log 67: Snow Day!
Who would've thought I'd have a snow day in Maui. The past 2 days in a row working at the Hyatt, we've had to close shop a few hours early, because wind speeds picked up to the point where dirt and debri was getting in people’s shaved ice. Each time this happened, my coworkers and I waited with baited breath as our manager debated whether we should remain open or not. When she finally made the call, a quiet ripple of excited whispers went through the shop. I couldn't keep from smiling as we closed down everything, even as I informed crestfallen customers that we were closed for the day. I left the Hyatt and headed to the beach to watch the sunset with Anne and Lucas.
The next morning, I woke up tired. You know those mornings? Where you just need a little more sleep? Well, I was having one of those. I went on my phone, reading through my texts groggily. Then, I sat up in my bed. Was I reading right? My manager had sent a text to the Hyatt team informing us that we would be closed for the day due to a lack of staff. My phone pinged as Lucas texted me: “SNOW DAY!”
I burst out the door of my room with a big smile on my face, almost believing I’d be met by flurries swirling through the air. I treated myself to a lazy morning, eating oatmeal while I solved the daily Wordle. Honestly, most of that day ended up being pretty lazy, save for a few errands we ran. And isn’t that how snow days always go? Either way, it couldn’t have come at a better time, as season 8 of Love Island UK had just started airing at the time. I tentatively asked the group how they would feel about watching the first episode. Anne was interested, and Lucas was willing enough, so we sat down and met the islanders. It was fun. The next day at Hyatt, I was on shift with Lucas - I was shaving and he was trimming. “Who do you think Davide is going to pick?” He leaned over to ask me over the drone of the shaving machine. “Davide” is the newest islander in the Love Island villa, who was introduced after the initial coupling ceremony. In 24 hours (at the end of the next episode), he will have to choose one of the five girls in the villa to couple up with, breaking up her existing couple and leaving her previous partner single.
I scratched my head. It was a multifaceted question. “I think it’s gonna be Gemma,” I replied. Lucas nodded thoughtfully. “That’s what I was thinking too, but he’s also been chatting with Tasha,” he pointed out. I hadn’t considered this. Having someone at work to discuss Love Island with is a huge win.
Lowlight: I hate to do a lowlight instead of a highlight, but this is too bad to not mention - I got a gum infection. At first, this discovery overwhelmed me with dread, but I combatted it with my mantra. Okay, the worst case scenario here, is that all your teeth fall out. And if that happens, then this infection was too far along to be helped anyway, so don’t stress about it. And if it isn’t too far along to be helped, then the doctor will prescribe you something to help, so again, no point worrying about it. Anyways, I did go to the doctor and they gave me a prescription mouth rinse, as well as some antibiotics. They told me that hopefully, the infection should clear up within a few weeks. On the bright side, flossing has officially won me over for life.
