Log 48: Getting in a Grove Pt.2
When I started working for Featherlite Exhibits in July, it took a little less than 4 weeks before I settled into a routine. Life stopped feeling so chaotic, with fewer new things to do and adjustments to make around every corner. That's kind of how I feel now about life in Lahaina. This Saturday will mark the end of my fourth week in Hawaii, and I’m finally getting into a groove.
I moved out of Hakuna Matata’s dorms and into the work-stay room on the 10th. It's smaller than the dorm rooms, but with only two people in it (instead of 5), it feels pretty spacious. In fact, it kind of feels like I’m in a college dorm room. I even have a roommate! Her name’s Hanna, she's my age, and hails from California. Hanna visited Maui with her family in December, and decided to come back on her own and work at the hostel. I like having her around - she comes up with things for us to do, we both have Aries moons, and her daily jobs around the hostel include cleaning our room.
I’m still enjoying work, too. All my coworkers are super fun to be around, and I'm slowly but surely getting better at being a shavista. Yesterday marked the first time I navigated from the staff parking lot, through the hotel kitchen, and to the shaved ice stand without getting lost. No longer will kitchen and poolside staff members find me wandering the halls aimlessly and have to escort me to Ululani’s.
The biggest news is: I got a moped! And I got it for free, from my friend’s boss! Well, not entirely free. Basically, I got the bike for free, but I it’s on me to pay for the repairs - and the repairs are admittedly shaping up to be quite extensive. But, I think it's still a solid deal, because even a few hundred dollars in repairs is still a better deal than a $1000 new scooter. So, fingers crossed I can get it running.
Highlight: Last night, a woman visiting from Germany checked into the hostel, and we ended up talking about my shavista position at Ululani's inside the Hyatt, because she’d never had shaved ice. The following morning, I went to work, and just before closing, I saw her walk into the Hyatt. I made her a guava, passion fruit, and mango ice with coconut ice cream on the bottom. After her first bite she looked up and exclaimed, “I’m never having plain ice cream again!”
